Pregnancy Resources: Over the Counter Medications

The following is a small list of over-the-counter medications that you may take during pregnancy. If you are experiencing any of the following ordinary ailments, you may try these medications without calling the office. If your symptoms become more severe, or you have used these medications for at least three days without relief, please call the office for further guidance. Our office number is 214-823-7900.

Headache
  Tylenol (Extra Strength) You may take 2 extra strength tablets (500 mg each) every 6 hours PLEASE DO NOT USE ASPIRIN, NAPROXEN (ALEVE), OR IBUPROFEN (MOTIN, ADVIL) UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY THE OFFICE.


Cold Symptoms

 

  Sudafed, Benadryl, Claritin, Contac, Tylenol
Stuffy Head and Runny Nose

 

  Tylenol Cold & Sinus, Ocean Nasal Spray
Cough
  Robitussin DM (be sure to increase your fluids with any cold/cough-this thins secretions and lessens your congestion).


Sore Throat
  Cepacol, Chloraseptic, warm salt water gargle

 

Heartburn, Gas, Indigestion, "Sour Stomach"

 

  Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids, TUMS, Pepcid ,Zantac, Tagamet, Prilosec OTC
Constipation
  INCREASE YOUR FLUIDS, Fiber supplements such as Metamucil or Citrucel, Stool softeners such as Colace or Surfak (may use up to twice daily).

Diarrhea
  Imodium

Nausea, Vomiting
  Emetrol CALL IF PERSISTENT-Remember to “rest” your stomach by taking in clear fluids only for at least 12 hours-if you cannot hold in any fluids during that time, CALL THE OFFICE (214)823-7900

 

Hemorrhoids
  TUCKS or Witch Hazel Pads, Warm Sitz Baths
Preparation-H (call if bleeding).

 

Painful Urination
